A Wolverhampton man has spent his first nights behind bars after he was convicted of grossly exposing and touching himself in front of women on public transport in the West Midlands.

Daniel Hayden, of Hobgate Road, appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 19 November. He was handed a 21 month imprisonment, indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the sexual offenders register for ten years.

On 19 December last year, the 37-year-old the defendant boarded a train at Wolverhampton, heading towards Birmingham New Street. During the journey, he walked through the carriage, looking for a women to target with his inappropriate behaviour.

He walked past his victim, a woman in her twenties, but then turned back and sat near to her. He then exposed and touched himself inappropriately while staring at her.

The following month on the 16 January, Hayden was on a Birmingham to Wolverhampton train where he targeted another woman. As before, he sat near the woman and exposed and touched himself inappropriately.

Unbeknown to Hayden, an off duty officer was on board the train. When the victim went to get help, she alerted the officer who detained him until the arrival of BTP officers at which point he was arrested.

Thanks to the overwhelming evidence against Hayden, including witness statements and CCTV footage, he was forced to plead guilty to two charges of exposure and was also sentenced in connection with a similar incident on a bus in the Wolverhampton area involving a girl in her teens.

DC Andrew Parkinson from BTP, said: “Hayden is a notorious sex pest, he is a registered sex offender who has history for this type of disgusting behaviour in the West Midlands and previously in south London. This imprisonment is very welcomed and is proof that if you do not improve on your behaviour, you can face time behind bars.

“I would like to thank the victims in these cases to reporting his behaviour to police. In doing so, we were able to link multiple offences as part of one trial, which ultimately proves how serious Hayden’s offending has become.”

As part of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, upon release from prison Hayden is prohibited from:

1. Unzipping or loosening or removing trousers shorts or any other garment covering his genitalia or taking any action that would result in his genitalia being exposed in any public place or private place to which the public have access or direct line of sight. This prohibition does not prevent him from using male public toilets or from getting changed in a private cubicle or male only changing environment.

2. Sitting immediately next to or opposite any lone female unknown to him on any form of public transport in the United Kingdom unless the circumstances dictate that this is unavoidable (ie a busy train carriage or bus where this is the only seat available) and to move seats and/or stand away where possible if a female sits next to him.

3. Using public transport within the UK between the hours of 9pm and 8am.
