Rocks thrown at train causing damage – Sheffield

A train which was travelling close to 70mph was damaged after rocks were thrown from a bridge near to Butterthwaite Lane in Sheffield. 
 
The incident happened at approximately 6.30pm on 5 August. The driver of the service reported seeing three youths on the footbridge who threw items at the train. 
 
The driver also saw a fourth child who was line side. A number of the items, believes to be rocks, struck the Northern train causing damage. 
 
Officers are today appealing for witnesses to get in touch. Were you near to Butterthwaite Lane at this time, did you see four youngsters throwing items over the footbridge?

Trespassing on the railway, and throwing items at trains travelling at high speed is highly dangerous. Not only do trespassers put themselves at risk, but throwing items could result in someone being seriously injured or indeed killed.
