Detectives are appealing for information after a woman was sexually assaulted on a train between Newcastle and Edinburgh last week.

The incident happened on Thursday 19 April after the 30-year-old victim boarded the 4.42pm Newcastle to Edinburgh Waverley service.

Unable to find a seat on the train, she stood next to a group of men who she had been chatting to at Newcastle station prior to boarding. During the course of the journey, one of them sexually assaulted her. The victim, in response, slapped him but the man retaliated by punching her on the jaw.

Detectives are keen to speak with anyone who was on board this train and may have seen what happened. Any piece of information, no matter how small, could prove vital to the investigation.

Anyone with any information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016, quoting reference 537 of 19/04/2018. Alternatively, information can be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
