Two officers from York were assaulted whilst arresting an abusive man at York station last night.

Both officers were responding to a call for police assistance by staff on board a Northbound Cross Country service on platform 5 at the station.

When one of the officers attempted to escort the abusive man, who was suspected of assaulting a member of train staff, off the train, he was head butted in the face, resulting in him losing consciousness on the platform for a short time and leaving him with a serious eye injury.

His colleague managed to handcuff the man who was assisting arrest,  in the melee he injured his shoulder.

The man was detained and has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The injured officer was taken to hospital where he was released after treatment and taken home.

Superintendent Eddie Wylie said: "On a daily basis police officers put themselves in harms way to deal with incidents to keep the public safe, its part of the job, being assaulted isn't. I have spoken to the officer and despite his horrendous injury, he is in good spirits which is a testament to the excellent officer that he is."
