An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison after he was found in possession of a knife at Basildon Station.

Joshua Johnstone, of no fixed abode, was stopped and searched by officers at the station on 18 August.

They found him in possession of a stanley knife with four replacement blades.

He pleaded guilty at Surrey Magistrates’ Court on 19 September and was sentenced on the same day.

PC Arron Hurley said: “I welcome the sentence handed to Johnstone for possession of such a dangerous item. I hope this shows how seriously the police and courts deal with people carrying weapons.

“People using the railway network should be able to travel without fear and this incident shows how we at British Transport Police are making it more safe and secure every day.”
