Officers from British Transport Police are appealing for information after a man picked up a passenger’s wallet on a train before using his contactless payment card in a Newbury supermarket.

The man boarded the train at Reading West station and whilst on board he picked up the wallet before leaving at Newbury to use the card in a Tesco store.

PC Antonio Civitillo is leading the investigation. He said: “The victim, a 25-year-old man from Newbury, believes he dropped his wallet on the train before the man picked it up and went on to use his card.”

Investigators have released an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the theft, which took place between 2.30pm and 4pm on Monday, 21 August.

After following several lines of enquiry, including reviewing CCTV and tracing the transactions made on the cards officers are now releasing an image of a man who they believe may have key information about the investigation.
