We are appealing for information after an arson on the railway in Newport.

At around 8.45pm on Friday 7 July, Network Rail staff noticed a fire that had spread onto the railway from the Lliswerry Ponds area.

The fire spread to lineside equipment boxes causing extensive damage to cabling which has cost over £10,000 in repairs.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the area on the evening of 7 July who may have information about the fire.

Lliswerry Ponds is a popular area for fishing and picnics, so there may well have been people nearby who saw something out of the ordinary which could be linked to the fire.

If you have any information, please call 0800 40 50 40 or text information to 61016, quoting reference number 625 of 7/7/17.
