Ricky Chell, aged 26, from Stoke-on-Trent, was previously sentenced last year to 18 months’ imprisonment for assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and common assault for his part in the attack.

The incident happened on Saturday 27 February 2016. Chell, Henshall, Jackson and Jackson were being rowdy and disruptive on board a train from Manchester Piccadilly destined for Stoke.

Chell became aggressive towards passengers on the busy train service, culminating in him hitting a man in the face with a glass bottle, causing a five inch gash to the victim’s face which required stiches.

Henshall, Jackson and Jackson became involved attacking other male and female passengers and kicking and stamping on another man on the platform, in close proximity to the train and platform edge.

When other members of the public came to the victim’s aid, the offenders began attacking them too, and a large disorder broke out, spilling onto the platform at Macclesfield station.

A 32-year-old man was punched, kicked and stamped on whilst on the floor on the platform resulting in him sustaining various injuries including a broken bone in his foot.

Witnesses described Henshall, Jackson and Jackson as trying to kick the victim between the train and the platform. They continued to punch him even after he shouted at them to stop as he had broken his leg.

A 37-year-old man was head-butted and punched; resulting in his jaw being broken in four places which he is still undergoing treatment and suffering from.

A 35-year-old woman was punched in the face by the defendants.

Part of the incident was captured on CCTV, members of public filmed parts of the attack on their mobile phones and sent this to police and specialist Scenes of Crime Officers recovered items from the scene linking back to the defendants. Numerous members of the public witnessed this attack and assisted the enquiry.

Three of the victims were taken to hospital for treatment.

A 16-year-old girl who was travelling on the train was hit by flying glass, sustained minor injuries and suffered a panic attack.

Investigating officer, Det Sgt Matt Davies, said: “The attack by Chell,  Jackson, Jackson and Henshall was described by witnesses as vicious, relentless and horrifying.

“They used shocking levels of violence against complete strangers, in a sustained, unprovoked assault. The victims, especially the man who was stamped on while he lay on the floor, are fortunate that they were not more seriously hurt.

“I am pleased that these men have been given prison sentences that reflect the violent nature of their crimes.”
