Our Assistant Chief Constable and proud Welshman, Alun Thomas, has been awarded a Queen’s Policing Medal on the honours list this weekend.

ACC Thomas leads the Specialist Operations teams at BTP, whose job it is to disrupt and deter terrorist activity, and keep the public safe. They include our firearms, dogs, behavioural detection officers and specialist response units.

He only found out about the honour less than a week ago.

Alun said: “I’m honoured, I really am. And it’s nice for the family. In this job, you spend an awful lot of time away from them so it’s nice for the whole family to get some recognition.

“I think I’ve only been able to do what I’ve been able to do because of the support around me. You never work alone in this job. The BTP team around me is incredible.”

Alun took over Specialist Ops for BTP in December 2014, leading the teams as they protect the rail network of mainland UK from the growing threat. He took the BTP operation onto trains in France for the Euro Championships in 2016 and most recently, leading the BTP operation for the UEFA Champions League final in Cardiff earlier this month.

Prior to joining BTP, he worked at South Wales Police for many years and in 2014, was the Silver Commander for the policing of the NATO summit in Wales, which saw more than 130 world leaders descend on the UK.

He also regularly raises thousands of pounds for charity, running 16 Iron Man challenges, dozens of triathlons and completing the Marathon Des Sables across the Sahara desert in 1996 – the first Welshman to do so.

He said: “I think being the son of a miner from the Welsh Valleys has helped, and having those working class values, they’ve never left me. It’s about working with people, having that sense of community and relying on the people around you, that’s what’s allowed me to do the things I’ve done.

“I’ve been lucky in the positions I’ve been in and, at Specialist Operations, you’re always front and centre in the current climate but it’s all been about the people I’ve worked with. I’ve had some great opportunities.”
